In 1834, English gardener William Carvill laid the foundation for the oldest planned college landscape in America.
Today, the Haverford College Arboretum includes 400 species of trees and shrubs and 5,000 total trees on its 216-acre campus.
The Arboretum includes a 3.5-acre duck pond, gardens, and wooded areas. There is also a two-mile nature path around the campus. The majority of trees are labeled, so it’s a great place to get inspiration for
planting at home.

A popular event is the State Champion Tree Tour, a walking tour that includes the Arboretum’s 11 State Champion trees, led by Scott Wade, coordinator of the Pennsylvania Champion Tree Program. It’s too late to take this year’s tour (which was on April 2), but check the website for lots of workshops and activities for adults and children. May’s programs include the Nature Book Club, Beneficial Insects for Your Garden, and All About Bees.
